Are quartz watches and mechanical watches easily damaged by magnets?

Sep 10,2023

Although quartz watches and mechanical watches are driven in different ways, they are both affected by magnets. As watch manufacturers, we understand that quartz watches and mechanical watches have different vulnerabilities to magnetic fields, so let’s take a look at that.

1. Quartz watch:

Quartz watches are generally less susceptible to magnetic field interference than mechanical watches. This is because quartz watches rely on a battery-powered quartz crystal to regulate timekeeping, and the electronics in these watches are less affected by magnetic fields. However, extreme magnetic fields or prolonged exposure to strong magnets can still damage the function of a quartz watch to a certain extent. Modern quartz watches usually have some degree of built-in magnetic resistance, which helps protect them from the mild magnetic effects encountered in daily life.

2. Mechanical watch:

Mechanical watches are more susceptible to magnetic fields. Sensitive mechanical components such as balance wheels and hairsprings are easily affected by even weak magnetic fields. When a mechanical watch comes into contact with magnets, it may cause inaccurate timing, or in severe cases, the watch may stop completely. This is why watch enthusiasts usually prefer to keep their mechanical watches away from strong magnets.

In order to prevent magnetic field interference, some mechanical watches are designed with anti-magnetic features, such as using special materials or shielding for some parts. These watches are called "anti-magnetic" watches. However, they are not completely immune to the effects of magnets and can still be affected by extremely strong magnetic fields.

Although both quartz and mechanical watches are affected by magnets, mechanical watches are more susceptible to interference from magnetic fields. If you want to ensure the accuracy and reliability of your mechanical watch, it's best to avoid exposing it to strong magnetic fields, and if you anticipate being in a magnet-rich environment, consider purchasing a watch with antimagnetic properties, or purchasing a quartz watch.
